Arranging is composing without the royalities.

I love to quote the great (but quirky) composer Alec Wilder. "Arranging after all is a euphisism for it includes composition as well as orchestration. The introductions, countermelodies, transitions, and reharmonising are all more that just orchestration. But by using the word arrangement, they get two skills for the price of one."

There are times when our added material is more creative than the original material we're working with. Now that's a problem because the job is to present the original in the best light possible, not overshadow it. To quote Hank Mancini, "The song is the thing and the arranger's function is to make it memorable, regardless of one's personal feelings."
